Who can apply for the IELTS LIFE SKILLS A1 test?

If you are applying for a UK visa designated as ‘family of a settled person’, then as a part of your application process, the IELTS life skills test is applicable.

How long does the IELTS Life Skills A1 test go?

IELTS life skill A1 is conducted in a time span of 16-18 minutes in which the candidate is required to prove his/her English-speaking skills to meet specific immigration requirements.

How is the IELTS life skills A1 test evaluated?

IELTS Life Skills A1 test is evaluated by your allotted examiner based on your performance as per the following criteria:

  • Obtaining information by asking questions on a common topic
  • Conveying information by answering questions on the same topic.
  • Speaking to communicate by evaluating the ability of a candidate to express herself/himself.
  • Examining the candidate’s ability to appropriately engage himself/herself in a conversation.

What is the format of the IELTS Life Skills A1 test result?

You will be considered successful in the test if you score 4 or above 4 out of 9. In your test report form, it either says pass or fail. Fail means you are unsuccessful; therefore, your result cannot be used further for a UK visa application.



How many attempts can I give for IELTS life skills A1?

There are no restrictions for retaking the test. Even though according to official guidelines once you pass the test you cannot take the test of the same level for two years.

When IELTS life skills A1 test result is obtained?

Within 7 days of your attempt, one copy of your test report form (TRF) is conveyed to you.

Is there any break in between the test?

There is no assigned time to have a break in-between the test, hence both skills – listening and speaking are assessed in a single session.
