Girl Watching The IELTS Clue Cards

7 key cue card topics for IELTS speaking exams in 2022

In the speaking section, you are given one of the IELTS speaking topics and one minute to think about it. After your one minute of thinking and notes-making, you are asked to talk about it for 2 minutes. Your heart just rushes and due to panic, the brain stops to think after couple of seconds. If you don’t utilize your 1 min time to think productively you might end up speaking the same point in different ways.

As simple as it sounds, people often find it difficult to bring themselves to the level of confidence to speak continuously on a given topic to a stranger aka IELTS examiner. However, confidence comes with practice. It comes with “Oh, I’ve done this before, I can do it again”.

We are here to help you with learning from IELTS cue card samples. Here are 7 important IELTS speaking topics and how you can approach them.

1. Describe the first time you ever communicated in a foreign language

For this particular topic of IELTS speaking, you should include: why did you choose a foreign language to communicate in, what was the situation, who did you speak with and what were the circumstances.

For example, one can say that they used a foreign language for the first time with their language teacher because the test needed to be communicated in that language.

Here is another model answer from IELTS cue card samples:

2. Describe your favorite tourist location

Here, you should start off with— where the place is and how you come across it. After that, for a major part you should talk about how the place looks and its highlights such as whether it has a beautiful view, intricate architectural structure, or psychological peace.

3. Describe the first time you drove a vehicle

Driving a vehicle for the first time is a memorable experience, so you will mostly talk about how you felt when you realized that you have crossed one of the milestones. You should include, what vehicle was it, were you thrilled, for how long were you learning to drive it, where and when did you drive it.

4. Describe a summer day you remember

Describe why you remember that summer day and how long ago it happened. You may also describe what happened during the course of the day and how specifically you remember that it was summer. To make your 2 minute-talk more engaging, explain the most interesting events of the day and how positively or negatively it turned out to be.

5. Your idea of a perfect trip

A perfect trip for you can be anything. It can be in the mountains— away from the hustle or in the Vatican City— the heart of spirituality. You would either want to explore places with your partner, family, or friends. It can be a road trip or a train ride. Describe your idea behind a perfect location in your words.

6. A thing closest to your heart

In this IELTS speaking topic, you have to incline more on a story part than a description part. If a thing close to your heart holds a story, tell it. Describe how you got it, from whom you received it, and how you built adoration for it.

7. Describe a day-to-day journey from your home to work/study place

This is one of the IELTS speaking topics where you can include how much distance you travel on a daily basis, what vehicle you choose to travel from. If it’s a bus, how do you pass your time? It can be listening to music, podcasts, or even reading a book. You can also mention what detectable places you come across during your short trip and your overall experience.
